Bailey Nelson is investing in it's design and product capability and has created the Senior Eyewear Designer Role. The purpose of the role is to design Bailey Nelson frames that look like the Bailey Nelson brand and perform well on the face. You are the internal champion of great design and pushing the Bailey Nelson product offering forward. This role is all about design and making great quality, stylish, functional product. It's not about the creative direction of Bailey Nelson. 


Role responsibilities:  

  • Designing frames that look like BN and function well 
  • Testing and improving the performance of the frame components - width, arm construction, nose bridge, hinge functionality, nose pad construction, materials combination 
  • Championing product and design thinking in the BN team to advance the product offering at BN
  • Trialing innovative materials and finishes  
  • Identifying and filling gaps in the collections in collaboration with the Merchandise team and Designer 
  • Partnering with factories to develop original design concepts
  • Collaborating with other brands and designers to produce unique collections 
  • Getting and using frame performance feedback from customers via the Retail team and Optical Dispensers - closing the feedback loop on frame performance to improve functionality and product quality in future ranges  
  • Developing new collections with the Designer and working with the marketing team to tell the story behind the collection to customers and BN Team 
  • Providing input into the product experience in store and online 
  • Reporting on market trends and how they translate into product for BN 

What the role is not responsible for: 

  • The range plan, critical path or production process  
  • The creative direction of Bailey Nelson brand 

KPIs to be delivered

  • Bailey Nelson frames are distinctive and high quality by customers 
  • Commercial metrics are achieved including sales, gross profit and low quality based write offs 
    • New designs and updated core range drive sales and improve conversion from browsing / eye exams to purchasing - sell through of fashion (non core lines) 
  • Frames are delivered on time according to the range plan and in adherence to critical path 
  • Innovation across components, raw materials and construction

Who does this role work closely with? 

  • Head of Buying to design according to range plan and margin requirements 
  • Retail team to get feedback on the performance of the frames
  • Production Manager who governs production critical path 
  • Designer who creates designs and develops, tech packs, liaises with suppliers and manages library of materials and samples

What are the skills and / or qualifications required?

  • 7+ years product design experience - expertise in design thinking and the design process
  • Eyewear design experience
  • Ability to review technical design drawings to specification
  • Advanced adobe creative suite skills 
  • Knowledge of manufacturing process, input materials and regulatory quality requirements
  • Track record of team and thought leadership
